Catalina is the youngest of several daughters in a noble Spanish family struggling to avoid bankruptcy.
When her father begins the process of arranging her marriage, Catalina falls into a deep depression, developing an eating disorder that makes her undesirable to suitors. She becomes obsessed with God and the idea of becoming a nun, believing that this path will grant her the freedom she so desperately craves.
